When an individual is seeking disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, they must file a disability claim and fill out a disability form called the Social Security disability application. It’s important for an individual who wants to file a disability claim to understand the benefits they are requesting and the eligibility they may have for these benefits.

•	Someone filing a disability claim for themselves or a family remember must keep in mind that they must be under the age of 65 and unable to work due to a disability. The disability form includes a section of answers for frequently asked questions that one may have about filing a disability claim. When filing a disability claim, an individual should know what the Social Security Administration considers disabled.

•	On the disability form, a disability is defined as the inability to participate in any former work related activity, as well as any other possible work related activities. This will be determined by any medical physician or mental impairment; the disability must be expected to last for at least one year or result in the death of the individual.

•	When the disability form is filled out, an interview is given in regards to the disability claim by a Social Security representative. The interview for the disability claim will last about a hour and the representative will ask the individual questions regarding their work history, family and actual disability. During this time, the disability form will be completed.

•	After the interview is completed, the individual’s disability claim is forwarded to a state agency. A specialist at the state agency known as an examiner will determine if the disability claim is valid or not by requesting the individual’s medical records and evaluating them to see if the person’s disability follows the same conditions mentioned in the disability form.

•	Usually, a disability claim decision will take less than four months to make. There are times when a disability claim can take longer than four months. This is due to several possible factors. If an individual is missing information on the disability form, then there could be time added on to the process. If the examiner has trouble gaining access to the individual’s medical records for their disability claim there will be a delay. Lastly, if the disability claim is denied and an appeal is requested by the individual filing the disability claim, then the disability claim process will have to be redone.

Filling out the disability form properly is a large factor in determining how long the disability claim will take to be accepted or denied. Checking with the Social Security representative to make sure that the disability form is filled out properly is smart idea when filing a disability claim.

Applying For Disability

When an individual finds themselves unable to perform their job as a result of a disability, it may be necessary for them to begin applying for disability benefits through Social Security. When finding out how to get disability benefits, an individual will find that they must take a series of steps while applying for disability.

•	Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Services disability income programs are federal programs that help individuals applying for disability. It is through one of these programs that an individual will receive their disability benefits. Only people who meet certain requirements should consider applying for disability benefits.

•	When an individual is inquiring on how to get disability benefits, they will find that the Internet is a good place to get information on applying for disability. When applying for disability, the Social Security Administration will gather information from an individual about their disability to see if they qualify.

•	There are some things that a person should know when they are wondering how to get disability insurance. Applying for disability can be done on the Internet, the telephone, or in person at a Social Security office. A person should be aware that applying for disability benefits online is only possible if they are over the age of 18. A social security application must be filled out. Applying for disability benefits will require an individual to have an interview with a Social Security representative.

•	At the interview, a person applying for disability benefits will be asked a series of questions. When applying for disability, a person must be able to give the Social Security Administration permission to speak with their doctor about issues regarding their disability. The doctor’s information will be collected in one section of the disability application called the Adult Disability Report. This report is necessary when applying for disability.

•	When applying for disability benefits in person or on the telephone, the interview should take about a hour. This interview will be conducted by telephone or in person at a Social Security office. A Social Security claims representative will ask the individual certain questions about the work that they performed during the prior years until the actual date that the individual became disabled or unable to work. When applying for disability, an individual must also provide their medical history dating back at least 12 months before the date that they became disabled.

•	When wondering how to get disability, a person should also consider the basic information that must be supplied and they must be willing to cooperate with the Social Security Administration. Some basic questions that one might be asked when applying for disability are about the individual’s family, military service and any past worker’s compensation incidents.

Once the interview and application are completed, a person’s next step in applying for disability is to wait for their claim to be reviewed by a state agent. Finding out if one will be eligible to start receiving disability benefits should generally take less than four months.
